People & Cultures • Video
Although the first wave of Cubans arrived in the late 1950s, Florida has long been a destination for immigrants since the Spanish first arrived in 1513. Even Florida’s Miccosukee and Seminole tribes migrated south seeking refuge from European colonization and conflict.
Today the Latinization of Florida continues with thousands of immigrants from Puerto Rico, Colombia, Nicaragua, and Guatemala. Haitians and Jamaicans characterize the increasing number of Caribbean immigrants. Economic opportunity attracts many Asians to Florida’s urban and suburban communities. The following recorded interviews of Florida scholars explore Florida’s increasingly diverse demographics.
